What broadband speeds does Sky offer?

Sky offers four superfast broadband packages, starting from just £25 per month with a minimum term of 18 months. As well as the monthly cost, you’ll also need to pay set-up fees, which will vary according to the plan you choose.

Whichever package you choose, Sky Broadband deals include line rental in the price. Sky also promises that you’ll receive the speed you’ve signed up for or your money back. Here’s what Sky currently offers customers:

Sky Superfast 35

This is Sky’s basic superfast broadband package but it still provides an average download speed of 35Mbps (megabits per second). This is plenty for a smaller household’s streaming and browsing needs, as long as there aren’t too many users online at the same time.

Sky Broadband Superfast

If you’re looking for slightly faster average speeds, Sky Broadband Superfast offers up to 59Mbps, costs just a fraction more, and allows small to medium-sized households to stream using multiple devices without interruptions.

Sky Broadband Ultrafast

Gamers and households which tend to have multiple devices online at once should sign up for Sky Broadband Ultrafast. This plan provides an average download speed of 145Mbps, which should be enough for large households with multiple devices online at once with data-heavy usage, such as working from home and streaming in HD.

Sky Ultrafast Plus

If only the fastest average speed is good enough for your household, Sky also offers the Ultrafast Plus broadband package. This comes with an average download speed of 500Mbps, which is enough even for households with heavy usage. However, Sky Ultrafast Plus is only available in around 21% of UK homes, so if you’re not lucky enough to live in an area with coverage, this won’t be an option.

Does Sky offer broadband-only deals?

Yes, if you’re only looking for a broadband provider, that’s not an issue with Sky. You can choose one of their four plans (Sky Superfast 35, Sky Superfast, Ultrafast or Ultrafast Plus) and add nothing else to your broadband deal. Line rental will be included in the price of the package but you’re under no obligation to add a Sky Talk plan to your deal.

You can also sign up to Sky Broadband Boost, which can help keep your broadband working at optimum levels. It’s essentially a Wi-Fi guarantee and for a small fee (currently £5), Sky Broadband Boost will give you access to:

  • Sky engineer visits at a time that suits you (including evenings and weekends) if there’s an issue with your broadband.
  • Daily checks on your connection to ensure you’re getting the broadband speed you’ve paid for.
  • Control over the amount of screen time available to your family through the Sky Broadband Buddy app.
  • An extra 2GB of data for Sky Mobile customers if your broadband drops out.

What is Sky Q?

Sky Q is an upgraded version of Sky’s pay-TV satellite service. All new customers will be offered Sky Q, while existing customers will be offered the service at a reduced price. As well as Sky TV channels, Sky Q also includes access to streaming services such as Netflix and BBC iPlayer.

To enjoy the service, you’ll need a Sky Q box, which, like previous Sky TV set-top boxes, will enable you to record and watch shows at the same time. The key difference is that a Sky Q box allows you to record a lot more. If you choose the premium 2TB Sky Q box, for example, you’ll be able to record six programmes and watch a seventh at the same time, which means you won’t have to choose between your favourite shows.

The smaller 1TB Sky Q box will let you record three programmes and watch a fourth at the same time. The 1TB box is also available with 4K Ultra HD or without, depending on what you need and your budget. A smaller Sky Q Mini box can be used to extend content to other rooms via your broadband connection.

Can I combine Sky Broadband with Sky Q?

Yes, if you’re looking to bundle services for easier account management, Sky offers a combined broadband and TV package, as well as broadband, TV and Sky Mobile.

Bundling your services can make admin much easier and customising your Sky broadband and TV deal can give you access to a whole host of Sky channels including those you won’t find on Freeview. As a Sky customer, you’ll also have the chance to subscribe to premium channels such as Sky Cinema and Sky Sports.

All Sky TV and broadband bundles include Sky Pay As You Talk, which covers calls made from your landline. The big point of difference is that you’ll only pay for the calls you make, which makes it an ideal option if you rarely use your home phone.

All bundles have a minimum contract term of 18 months and incur a set-up fee (cost depends on the bundle you choose). To enjoy Sky Broadband and Sky Q, simply choose from one of these five Sky deals:

Broadband package Bundle features Broadband speed Monthly cost Set-up cost
Sky Q & Superfast 35 200 free-to-air channels 36Mbps £32 £29.95

How can I watch other exclusive Sky TV channels?

After you’ve chosen a Sky bundle, you’ll be able to tailor your package to suit you by choosing from a range of exclusive Sky TV channels. The total cost of your package will depend on the add-ons you select, such as:

  • Sky Cinema – Access up to 12 exclusive Sky Cinema channels, including Sky Cinema Action, Sky Cinema Family and Sky Cinema Premiere. You’ll also enjoy Sky original movies and 20% off Sky rentals.
  • Sky Sports – A host of sporting events including Formula 1, cricket, golf, and more than 400 live football matches.
  • Sky Signature – More than 60 Sky TV channels formerly included in its Entertainment package, including Sky One, Sky Atlantic, Sky Comedy, and Comedy Central.

If Sky Sports isn’t enough to keep you up to date with sporting fixtures, you can also choose to add BT Sport to your Sky TV bundle. This will give you access to BT Sport 1, 2 and 3, as well as BT Sport ESPN. You’ll also be able to enjoy your BT Sports channels in high definition.

BT Sport is offered on a rolling 31-day contract, so it’s flexible enough for you to dip in and out of your favourite events without committing for longer than you need or want.

What other offers and features can I add to my Sky deal?

As a Sky customer, you can include Sky Talk or Sky Mobile to your TV and broadband deal if you want to. Don’t forget that Sky Pay As You Talk is already included in your package, but if you use your home phone on a regular basis and need a more comprehensive deal, Sky Talk also offers:

  • Sky Talk Anytime Extra – Inclusive minutes to UK landlines and mobiles on weekdays and weekends. You’ll also get reduced rates (2p per minute) on up to 20 international destinations.
  • Sky Talk Evenings and Weekends Extra – Inclusive minutes to UK landlines and mobiles after 7pm Monday to Friday. You’ll also get inclusive minutes throughout the weekend.
  • Sky Talk International Extra – Inclusive minutes for UK landlines and mobiles, as well as inclusive minutes to up to 50 international destinations.

If you choose any one of Sky Talk’s options, you’ll also need to pay line-rental charges. Sky also offers a range of pay-monthly mobile phone contracts and SIM-only deals.

Sky Broadband deals for new customers

New customers combining Sky TV packages with their broadband will automatically be offered Sky Q. You’ll also have the choice of adding on Sky Signature, which has replaced Sky Entertainment and now includes a host of box sets. Remember that to access Sky TV services, you’ll need an engineer to install a satellite dish.

If you’re switching from another provider and are only looking for broadband, the switch should take place remotely, so you won’t have to wait for an engineer’s visit. If you’re switching from Virgin Media, the process is a little different as Virgin uses its own cable broadband network. Switching from Virgin Media is still possible, but you’ll need to speak to Sky directly to arrange the changeover.

Sky Broadband deals for existing customers

If you’re an existing Sky customer, you could be eligible for selected offers that can include up to two free months of Sky Ultra HD, Sky Kids, and Sky Ultimate TV.

You can check what offers are available to you by going to your account in your My Sky app.

Frequently asked questions

Unlimited simply refers to the amount of data you can use. Before the pandemic, a number of broadband providers (including Sky) limited data use in certain packages, while unlimited broadband was sold at premium prices.

During the pandemic, however, many broadband providers removed data limits, so most broadband deals now offer unlimited data. This means that all Sky Broadband deals are unlimited, so you don’t have to worry about hitting a monthly data wall and having to pay extra.

Yes, all Sky Broadband services include line rental. It’s up to you, however, if you choose to have a landline or not. If you decide to take advantage of inclusive line rental and get a landline, Sky Pay As You Talk is also included in your package, meaning you’ll automatically be charged per minute for the calls you make, but won’t face an extra monthly cost.

No, almost all broadband providers (with the exception of Virgin Media) will need you to have a landline as this is how broadband is delivered to your home by any provider using the Openreach network.

If you have access to superfast speeds, broadband travels along fibre-optic cables from the exchange to a cabinet near your home. It then makes the journey from the cabinet into your property using a copper phone line. This is a process called fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) broadband. Most homes with superfast broadband have an FTTC connection.

The only major provider that doesn’t require a phone line for installation is Virgin Media, which uses its own network of coaxial cables to deliver broadband. You may also be able to get landline-free broadband if you have access to fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP), also known as full fibre. This delivers broadband directly into your home using fibre-optic cables and bypasses your phone lines altogether.

Sky Broadband is expensive compared with other providers but, depending on where you live, your choice of suppliers could be limited. This is down to the fact that not all providers operate throughout the country.

At the time of writing, Sky’s cheapest broadband-only plan is £25 for 36Mbps. While that’s a reasonable speed, there are deals offering much faster speeds for less. For example, TalkTalk Fibre 65 offers new customers 67Mb for £20 per month and no set-up costs (contract length is 18 months, which is the same as Sky Broadband). Virgin Media is also offering new customers an exclusive broadband deal with an average download speed of 108Mb for £24 and no set-up costs (also on an 18-month contract).

With that in mind, you’ll have to check which broadband providers operate in your area and compare deals to ensure you get the best price for your needs.Sky Broadband is expensive compared with other providers but, depending on where you live, your choice of suppliers could be limited.
