Messi vs Mbappe – the stars collide

Argentina and France are both 10/11 to win the 2022 World Cup final on Sunday. The final brings together two of football’s heavyweight nations and two of its brightest stars – Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.

Messi inspired his side’s 3-0 victory over Croatia in Tuesday’s first semi-final, scoring the opening goal from the penalty spot and producing a trademark mesmerising run that defied his 35 years to set up Julian Alvarez for the third goal – the Manchester City striker’s second of the match.

In what will be Messi’s last dance at the tournament, the team will hope to give their talismanic captain the send-off he deserves, although the challenge they face in the shape of France is huge.

Les Bleus became the first team in 20 years to reach back-to-back World Cup finals by beating Morocco 2-0 on Wednesday, Theo Hernandez and Randal Kolo Muani scoring their goals. The latter found the net with his first touch after coming on as a late substitute.

Mbappe, Olivier Giroud and Antoinne Griezmann have been in particularly scintillating form, with the last-named shining in the role of playmaker. Messi and Mbappe both have five goals, Alvarez and Giroud four apiece, so Sunday’s match will also decide the winner – or winners – of the Golden Boot.

Argentina are 9/5 to win Sunday’s final in 90 minutes, with the draw 2/1 and a France win priced at 7/4. Either side to win the game in extra time is 11/1, and either team to win on penalties is 8/1. Meanwhile, both teams to score (in 90 minutes) is evens with bet365.
